Before purchasing a kitchen or dining table, it’s important to take measurements.Think about the number of diners you’ll typically be seating and how much area you’ll need to walk around the table. Try to envision the flow of people as they walk around the table, to ensure they’ll have enough room on each side. Pull out a measuring tape and start measuring to calculate the table size needed. Here are a few design rules to keep in mind:
Measure the length and width of your room. Consider other pieces of furniture that are in the room, including buffets, sideboards, bakers racks, etc.
After measuring, ensure that you’ll have at least 3 feet of clearance on each side of the table so that people can easily get in and up from their seats. If there are any doors, it’s best to have a 4-foot clearance.Leave 42 to 48 inches between the table and the walls, cabinets or other furniture for easy access. Be sure to include extra table leaves in your calculations.
Once you’ve determined how big your space is, you can either purchase the dining table and chairs separately or as a dining room set. Depending on the seating capacity you need, you can select a set that comes with a table and two, four, six or eight chairs.
Table Shapes
While rectangular and square tables are the most common, if your kitchen has limited space, a round or oval shape might fit better as there are no corners to maneuver around. Many tables also have expandable leaves that can be stored away when not in use.
Styles and Materials
Whether your taste leans traditional, modern, farmhouse or transitional, there’s a dining table to suit any style. You can find modern dining tables in light wood tones, metal and glass. Sleek chrome or brass trim and table legs are common in more formal, modern spaces. Traditional and transitional tables are typically made of painted wood or wood with a light or dark stain. Modern farmhouse or rustic tables come in a mix of wood and black metal.
